What is the maximum dose of trazodone?

Short answer: For outpatients, the FDA label caps typical dosing at 400 mg/day. More severely depressed inpatients may be given up to, but not exceeding, 600 mg/day under close medical supervision.

Editorially reviewed

Trazodone's prescribing information sets 400 mg/day in divided doses as the usual outpatient maximum, with up to 600 mg/day reserved for more severely depressed inpatients under closer medical supervision. Off-label insomnia doses are almost always far below these antidepressant-range maximums. Never exceed your prescribed dose without discussing it with your prescriber.
